If the day is gloomy, stay dry and cruise along the compact sand from the comfort of your car and watch the sunrise or sunset over the Pacific. If you’re wanting to get active, play a round of soccer or beach volleyball, work up a sweat digging for razor clams, or even spend a few hours horseback riding along the sandy shores. Westport Maritime Museum

Learn the history of Westport at none other than the Westport Maritime Museum. Carve out a few hours in the former U.S. Coast Guard station five building complex.

Within the main building, the first and second floors are open to the public and house the maritime collection of the museum. The second of the original buildings, McCausland Hall, is used for lectures and events for museum programs.  Additionally, there are the two Whale House buildings that were constructed to house the marine mammal exhibit including a minke and gray whale. The fifth building, The Destruction Island Lens Exhibit Hall, houses the incredible Destruction Island Lens. All exhibits on the campus showcase maritime history from around the South Beach area of Grays Harbor and included fascinating shipwrecks, Coast Guard history, marine mammals, and plenty more to interest everyone in your family.

Westport Viewing Tower

For some of the best views of the coastline, head to the Westport Viewing Tower located at the end of the Marina. Known as a storm-watchers haven, the Tower offers unobstructed views of the roaring ocean down below and an incredible glimpse into the power of nature. Marvel as the sea spray blasts dozens of feet into the air during King Tides all while the gusting winds are often strong enough to lean directly into without falling. Head to our blog on ‘Making the Most of a Rainy Day in Grays Harbor‘ for more tips on storm watching!

While the Tower is the ultimate place to storm watch, it also is a fantastic spot to relax on a beautiful sunny day as the glittering waves roll along the shore. If you’re lucky, you may also catch a glimpse of marine life from this bird’s eye view!
