Here are a few tips for supporting local seafood for those of us in Grays Harbor. Every port town is different, and every port changes from season to season based on price, weather, market etc. A way to regularly to bring info to you about retail fish off the boats is in the works- in the meantime, here is a summary of three ways to support our industry across the board.
Buy Direct From a Fisherman When You Can
Right now, retail product off the dock is quiet based on market and price. While we had fishermen selling crab off their boats 2 weeks ago, this weekend is quiet. It is ever changing. However, albacore tuna season is right around the corner. This year consider using your extra time to can your own tuna. As the season approaches, we’ll get information about who is selling directly off their boats.
Not interested in canning tuna? Then buy directly from fishermen who process AND retail their product through canned goods. The product is amazing and you are directly supporting Westport fishermen and their families:
Get Familiar With Your Local Fish Market
Support local fish markets as they carry great local & regional products. We have so many cool retail fish markets in Grays Harbor! Whether you are looking for stand out products like salmon, oysters and crab, or something to stretch your taste buds a bit, they will help you pick great fish. No sure how to cook it? Just ask! Usually these guys have the great ideas for preparation and recipes. Many are close to reopening- so get ready! Here are a few:

Check the Labels at Big Box Stores
You can get great product from big box stores- just know what you are buying. Check the labels, skip the farmed, and avoid the imports from overseas. Not sure? Look for product of USA, Wild caught, and harvest locations descriptions.
