One of Washington’s biggest economy and tourism drivers is without a doubt the fishing industry. Not only does it give locals an opportunity to earn a livelihood, but charter fishing trips offer visitors a behind-the-scenes opportunity to see the hard work and dedication that fishermen put in everyday.
At the Westport Marina, Washington’s largest fish landing port, numerous local companies offer guided, public trips that typically begin in March and run through mid-October each year. Choose between fishing trips targeted for chinook and coho salmon, rockfish and lingcod, halibut, albacore tuna, or a unique combination trip, all of which provide a truly unforgettable experience that you’ll remember for years to come.
Looking to purchase fresh seafood? Westport Fresh Catch can help! This resource is great for picking up additional seafood after your voyage at sea or simply purchasing some product to enjoy on those days that you’re not ready to head out on the ocean.
Seven Important Tips to Know Before You Go
- Pack for any and all weather conditions! The forecast in the city of Westport may show partly sunny, however you never know how quickly it can change once you’re out on the open sea. Be sure to bring extra layers including a waterproof jacket and pants, boots or rubber sole shoes, a hat, gloves, as well as a spare change of clothes for the ride home.
- Whether you’ve been fishing before or not, choppy conditions on the ocean can make even the most seasoned fishermen queasy. Consider picking up some anti-nausea pills or a behind-the-ear patch before your trip (consult with your doctor first).
- Always try and make reservations beforehand, especially if you’re planning to take a trip during peak summer months. Although there are often spots still available the day of, if you’re traveling with a large group, it doesn’t hurt to call ahead.
- Double check with your chosen charter company beforehand, but most of them allow you to bring along a small cooler filled with lunch, beverages, and other snacks that are essential for a long day out on the water.
- Fishing licenses are required. One day passes can be purchased at most offices at the Westport Marina or even on the boat the day of sailing.
- Each trip varies on length at sea depending on the type of fish you’re catching. For example, you can expect to travel roughly 5 to 20 miles out for salmon and bottomfish, 25 to 50 miles for halibut fishing and 40 to 100 miles for albacore tuna. Additionally, salmon and halibut seasons are shorter than the bottomfishing season and are generally only during summer months.
- Although not required, deckhands will gladly accept tips at the end of your journey. Their job is not easy and appreciate the support!
